A qualifying chronic illness is generally defined as being unable to perform at least two of the six Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)—bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, or continence—for a period expected to last at least 90 days, or requiring substantial supervision due to severe cognitive impairment. A qualifying critical illness typically includes conditions such as heart attack, stroke, cancer, major organ failure, or other serious medical events, as defined in the policy.

In California, rider names, benefits, and definitions may differ from other states. Eligibility, benefit access, and payout amounts depend on the specific life insurance policy and carrier. Accelerated benefits are not long-term care insurance, and accessing benefits will reduce the remaining death benefit and may affect policy values. Not all applicants will qualify.
